Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico Il Poggiale Riserva 2012
|Brand||Castellare di Castellina|
Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is an amazingly full and generous Sangiovese with a vibrant level of aromatic intensity. If Castellare di Castellina were to make a Gran Selezione wine, Il Poggiale would be the obvious candidate. But both owner Paolo Panerai and winemaker Alessandro Cellai remain opposed to the idea. Fruit is sourced from a 45-year-old vineyard. It offers rich layers of plump cherry fruit, chocolate, spicy oak and grilled herb. These elements come together in seamless fashion.
Wine EnthusiastAromas of violet, plum, mint and sun-baked earth lead the nose of this blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo. The lively, elegant palate delivers juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and white pepper alongside firm, fine-grained tannins.
Wine SpectatorAromas of burning vine cuttings and autumn leaves grace the black cherry and plum fruit in this powerful Chianti Classico. Nervous tannins and a chalky feel on the finish complement the overall impression. Best from 2017 through 2024. 1,137 cases made.
