d'Arenberg The Custodian Grenache 2011

SKU 07288

The 2011 Custodian is a jewel of a wine that is perfectly balanced and harmonious. The first look suggests an enticing simplicity displaying primary fruit characters of mulberry, blueberry and plum. Deeper inspection however starts to reveal more complex layers, conjuring images of aniseed, fennel and coriander seed. The palate is warm and juicy. The sweet and savoury fruits are laced by fine silken tannins which lead to a super persistent finish, again displaying a delightful fruitiness, accompanied by more savoury, cedary, baking spice like notes. Simply put, this wine is liquid velvet.

Wine EnthusiastThe 2011 vintage wasn't an easy one in South Australia to say the least, which makes this wine all the more admirable. Mouthwatering, peppery, red-currant fruit remains firm and focused from start to finish, ending on a crisp note. Drink now-2023.

Wine SpectatorThis medium-weight, savory style emphasizes earthy, beach sand flavors. A wisp of red berry floats through the finish. Drink now through 2016. 600 cases imported.

Wine AdvocateMedium ruby-purple in color, the 2011 The Custodian Grenache has a nose of warm raspberries and red cherries with hints of Provence herbs and pepper. Medium-bodied and a little lacking in the typical Grenache generosity, it nonetheless offers a pleasant suggestion of red berry and pepper characters supported by chewy tannins and a finish with moderate persistence.
